Seven stops on our flower delivery round
Doing our bit for humanity
Like most retail businesses, Gardenia produces its fair share of waste. We have plastic wrap, paper, tape and string to throw away on a daily basis, and our shop floors are usually carpeted in discarded stems and foliage.
Waste is something that concerns us all. I know that my staff worry about it and customers often quiz us about recycling, so I thought it would be useful to set out our approach for clarification.
First Mile Recycling
Gardenia uses First Mile Recycling for every waste collection. First Mile believes in a world where everything can be recycled, and they are on a mission to make that a reality.
You can read more about First Mile here, but in short here’s what happens when our waste leaves our shops:
- Absolutely everything goes to one of First Mile’s state-of-the-art sorting and processing facilities, usually in East London.
- There, as you might guess, everything is separated and sorted for recycling. On average, they recycle 66% of all the material they collect.
- Nothing goes to landfill. Anything that can’t be recycled is incinerated to produce green energy.
- This helps make First Mile a carbon neutral company – a green supplier to our green-fingered business.
I hope this information puts your mind at rest with regards to our recycling credentials. If you have any further queries or concerns, feel free to call us or ask one of the team next time you’re passing.
